VERBIER FESTIVAL 2020: Cancellation

Message from the Direction

It is with infinite regret and sadness that we announce the cancellation of the 2020 Verbier Festival this coming summer.

The Verbier Festival has created a truly global inter-generational gathering place in Verbier for 26 years. Artists, students and music-lovers from all over the world make the trip to be with us each summer, which puts us in a precarious position under present circumstances.

We have always been proud to call our community of artists, students, festivalgoers, Friends of the Festival and community partners our ‘family’. This is a time to protect this family; its health and well-being are our primary concern. Our news will inevitably have financial implications on artists who will be without work this summer, businesses in Verbier and the region, and the temporary staff who join us each summer; we feel deeply for them all.

Ticket sales cover about a third of the overall cost of the Festival and Academy and are a very important part of the equation. All ticket purchases will be eligible for full refund. However, if you are able to convert all or part of what you have paid into a donation to help us cover our commitments and streamlined operations at this difficult time, we would be enormously grateful. If you are a Swiss taxpayer1, you will be eligible for a tax receipt for your donation allowing you to reclaim roughly 20% of your gift on your next tax return. You may also convert your purchase to credit for tickets to the next Festival edition, which will take place 15 to 31 July 2021.

Ticket buyers are asked to visit our Ticket Return page by 30 April, where they may submit a form with their choice to donate, receive a credit or a refund for all or a portion of the value of tickets purchased. The Festival team will then be in touch with each ticket buyer to confirm the return. Should you decide to call the Verbier Festival Office or Verbier Festival Ticket Office by telephone, we appreciate your patience as phone lines will undoubtedly be busy.

We extend immeasurable thanks to our artists, students, faithful festivalgoers and Friends of the Verbier Festival for their patience and support in this difficult time. And of course we are enormously grateful to Commune de Bagnes, Loterie Romande, Canton de Valais, our committed donors and partners—in particular Principal Philanthropic Partner Aline Foriel-Destezet, the Verbier Festival Chairman’s Circle, The Friends of the Verbier Festival, and Principal Sponsors Bank Julius Baer and the Neva Foundation—as well as the Verbier Festival Foundation Board, staff and volunteers, all of whom are working tirelessly to ensure that our beloved Verbier Festival will return next year and in the future.

In looking forward to 2021—and on the bright side for the nearly 220 musicians accepted to the Verbier Festival Academy’s orchestra, conducting, instrumental and voice programmes—invitations to students will be deferred for one year. The date to confirm participation will be communicated at a later time.

Wishing you and your families good health in these trying times.
