Schubert summarised his previous sonatinas into a purely romantic four-movement sonata named “Grand duo”.

Dedicated to Clara Schumann, Sonata No. 2 in A major starts with a hypersensitive and mournful dialogue between the violin and the piano. The mood gets suggestive and playful in the second movement, before turning insistent and sharp in the final allegretto.

David Oistrakh was dedicated the two Chostakovich violin concertos, whose heritage can be found in Sonata Op. 134: the violinist has to exploit his instrument’s most extreme tones and musical colours among a world of tonal depths and shifts.
