Bartók’s Quartet for Piano and Strings had only been played twice before the sheet music disappeared. Recently found in a record office in Budapest, the score is an early work of the composer. The wide tone range in orchestral proportions and the colour combinations are reminiscent of Brahms, who received Bartók’s admiration. True emotional density eventually comes from the fiery rhythm and radiant vibrato.

In Dvořák’s String Sextet Op. 48 (1878), the tangled motifs and complex thematic structures are also inspired by Brahms. The recognizable folk dimension explores melancholy and lyricism. The Furiant alternates binary and ternary rhythms in a frenzied final dance.
