We’ve already presented the incredible lineup of violinists and cellists for the 2025 programme, but there are plenty of other string instruments to explore and enjoy in the intimate setting of the Verbier Festival!
We’ve already presented the incredible lineup of violinists and cellists for the 2025 programme, but there are plenty of other string instruments to explore and enjoy in the intimate setting of the Verbier Festival! This week, we’ve curated a selection of concerts featuring exceptional musicians, including harpists, violists, and guitarists!
At just 25, Tjasha Gafner is already recognized as one of the most exciting young harpists of her generation. After capturing both First Prize and the Audience Prize at the ARD Competition in Munich, the Swiss musician makes her Verbier debut with a poetic, storybook-inspired programme—from Bach to Marcel Tournier. She also joins flutist Magdalena Bogner and cellist Nicolas Hartmann on July 21 for a one-of-a-kind performance of a Haydn Trio, reimagined with harp in place of the piano.
Revealed by his success at the Victoires de la Musique awards in 2019, Thibaut Garcia has since built a career in which charisma rivals inventiveness. For his first time in Verbier, his programme is a tribute to guitar master Agustín Barrios Mangoré, a fascinating Paraguayan composer who masterfully fused European Romantic traditions with the vibrant sounds of South American traditional music.
Expect a captivating musical escape!
MILOŠ is undoubtedly one of the most prominent guitarists of his generation. His main skill is his curiosity and eclecticism, which has led him to explore genres as varied as classical music, rock, and film scores. His recital, featuring works by Rameau, Bach, Scarlatti, Albéniz and even The Beatles, proves it once again. He’ll also be appearing alongside Martin Fröst on July 27 for “Fröst Interlaced”—a one-of-a-kind concert full of unexpected twists.
This summer, British violist Lawrence Power invites you to join him for three Rencontres Inédites. A highly sought-after soloist, (playing with renowned musicians such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, Thomas Adès, and Iván Fischer…), he is also a distinguished mentor, returning in July to the Verbier Festival Academy, where he will train the next generation of musicians. For his concerts this year, Lawrence Power will be joined by his trusted chamber music partners, including Janine Jansen, Ilya Gringolts, Nicolas Alstaedt, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and Behzod Abduraimov.
Antoine Tamestit, playing one of the rare Stradivarius violas still in circulation (his was crafted in 1672), has built an exceptional career across the globe. Renowned for his recordings of Bach and Mozart, he also embraces contemporary works, such as Jörg Widmann’s Viola Concerto, composed for him. Tamestit is a regular at the Verbier Festival, where his diverse talents are on full display. This year, he will perform in several configurations: a recital with Julien Quentin, chamber music alongside Leonidas Kavakos, Gautier Capuçon, and Mao Fujita, and with orchestra, in the rarely performed Bruch Viola and Clarinet Concerto. Don’t miss his Shostakovich evening on July 29, where he will perform the Viola Sonata with pianist Evgeny Kissin.
Co-Artistic Director of the Verbier Festival alongside Martin Engstroem and a key figure in the VF Chamber Orchestra, Blythe Teh Engstroem will return to the Verbier stage this summer for two Rencontres Inédites. Her first concert, featuring Schumann’s Piano Quintet, is already sold out, so don’t miss the chance to hear Blythe Teh Engstroem perform the captivating Verklärte Nacht by Schoenberg on July 27!
A student of the great Nobuko Imai and winner of the prestigious “BBC Next Generation” award, Timothy Ridout brilliantly represents the new generation of violists making an impact on stages worldwide. This season, he will perform with first-class orchestras such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Tokyo Metropolitan, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and will soon give recitals at Wigmore Hall in London and Lincoln Center in New York. A passionate chamber musician, regularly collaborating with Janine Jansen, Joshua Bell, Steven Isserlis among others, Timothy Ridout will perform at Verbier this year in four Rencontres Inédites!
