Esmé Quartet

string quartet
Biography

The Esmé Quartet, formed in 2016 in Cologne by four childhood friends, takes its name from the Old French word for loved (‘aimé’). The musical personality of violinists Wonhee Bae and Yuna Ha, violist Jiwon Kim and cellist Ye-eun Heo earned them First Prize and four Special Prizes at the Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in 2018, as well as the place of Laureate HSBC of the Academy of the Festival of Aix-en-Provence. The warm sound and stage presence of the four Koreans has been heard at the Lucerne Festival, the Musiq3 Festival and the Lille Opera. Before recording its first album of works by Beethoven, Unusk Chin and Frank Bridge in 2020, the quartet was awarded the Hans-Gál Prize by the Academy of Sciences and Letters of Mainz and Villa Musica.
