JOHANNES BRAHMS (1833-1897)
Symphony No. 1 in C minor Op. 68

Two of Brahms’ best-loved orchestral works, both completed in the 1870s, form the programme for a concert conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, who made his first appearance at the Verbier Festival in 2018. Soloist in the violin concerto is Swedish-born Daniel Lozakovich. Still in his teens, he has remained close to the Festival since attending the Academy in 2014; two years later Le Temps wrote, “This prodigy already has all the makings of a great player.” The Symphony No 1 forms yet another salute to Beethoven in his 250th anniversary year: it enabled Brahms both to break free of the shadow cast by his titanic predecessor and to establish himself as a worthy heir in the symphonic tradition.
