“How happy I am to be able to walk among the shrubs, the trees, the woods, the grass, and the rocks — no one can love the countryside more than I do — for the woods, the trees, and the rocks give a man the inspiration he needs”

— Ludwig van Beethoven

This summer the Verbier Festival joins the world in celebrating the 250th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven’s birth. Beethoven’s legacy extends far beyond his iconic music. His love of nature—a place of relaxation and solitude—was one of his great inspirations. In fact, his Sixth Symphony, the ‘Pastoral’, musically depicts the harmonious unity between mankind and nature. With our environment under threat like never before, this theme, which is central to Beethoven’s ethos, is a touchstone for the urgent questions we face today. What can we do save the planet, and how, in particular, can foundations and philanthropists play a leading role?
