The story of Eugene Onegin spans several years, yet its script was written in one night. Tchaikovsky’s most famous opera was born out of a sudden infatuation with Pushkin’s novel. Pushkin’s story of a man who kills his best friend in a duel and lives in eternal regret depicts a universal image of the human condition. The composer conceived his opera as a series of episodes that only remotely evoke the plot of the original novel, concentrating on the psychology of the characters. The success of this construction, which would also be used in Puccini’s La Bohème twenty years later, was due to the fact that the audience was already largely familiar with the original work, and therefore did not really need long exposition scenes. In fact, his main arias explore the variety of feelings experienced by their performers and were thus able to achieve exceptional fame, like Lenski’s aria, whose popularity extends far beyond the world of classical music.
