Carnaval Romain, where Berlioz interweaves a delicate serenade melody with a wild Roman dance named saltarello. The same is true of Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, which employs material as diverse as a Croatian folk melody and a court dance. The second part transports us to the New World; the most emblematic dances of New York musical theater are at the heart of Richard Rodgers’ Carousel Waltz, while Copland’s Dance Symphony explores, through its variations on folk dances, a certain image of the American soul. The work was written at the request of Leonard Bernstein, a conductor for whom Barbara Hannigan has never concealed her admiration, sharing his originality of approach and physical intensity of direction.
