Recipient of the 2010 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and First Prize Winner of the Walter E. Naumburg Viola Competition, David Aaron Carpenter has emerged as one of the world’s leading young artists. He has been acclaimed by Die Welt as “A New Star at the Forefront of Violists”; by The Philadelphia Inquirer as “an overnight-star violist”; and by The Strad Magazine as a violist whose “soulful sound, committed playing and dazzling technique leaves little to desire.” Since making his debut of the Walton Viola Concerto in 2005 with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach, David has performed with leading musicians and orchestras in the United States and Europe. This past November, he made his debut in Germany with the Dresden Staatskapelle performing the Schnittke Viola Concerto. In 2008, he was Maxim Vengerov’s last-minute replacement for performances of Benjamin Yusupov’s Viola, Tango, Rock Concerto with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra in Switzerland. He has performed in the United States at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Chicago’s Krannert Center, and San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre, among other venues. In September, David released his first recording on the Ondine label of the Elgar Cello Concerto (arr. Lionel Tertis/Carpenter) and the Schnittke Viola Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Maestro Christoph Eschenbach. The disc received international acclaim and received numerous awards such as the Editor’s Choice Award by Gramophone Magazine and Disc of the Month by The New Yorker. As a chamber musician, David has collaborated with renowned artists Emanuel Ax, Sarah Chang, Sol Gabetta, Leonidas Kavakos, Julian Rachlin, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Yuja Wang and performs regularly at the Schleswig-Holstein and Verbier Music Festivals.
David was born in New York in 1986 into a family of musical siblings. He began his musical studies on the violin at age six with Nicole DiCecco and later on the viola at the age of 11. He pursued both instruments at the pre-college divisions of the Juilliard and Manhattan Schools of Music in New York under the tutelage of Toby Appel, Lewis Kaplan, Isaac Malkin, and Christina Khimm. He continued his studies with world-renowned viola pedagogues Yuri Bashmet, Roberto Diaz, Nobuko Imai, Robert Mann, Pinchas Zukerman. In 2005, David was the First Prize winner of the Greenfield Young Artists Competition and in 2006 he won the highly coveted First Prize at the Walter E. Naumburg Viola Competition. David was presented with the Presidential Gold Medal at a performance in Washington’s Kennedy Center subsequent to his winning the first ever Gold Award from the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts (NFAA). In June 2007, he became the first American protégé for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative with mentor Pinchas Zukerman. In addition to his musical accomplishments, David received his A.B. degree in Political Science and International Relations from Princeton University in 2008.

In the 21/22 season, Antoine Tamestit was able to showcase the breadth of his talents in residencies with the London Symphony Orchestra (Artist Portrait), Staatskapelle Dresden (Capell-Virtuos) and the Cologne Philharmonie (Porträtkünstler). In 22/23, he will be Artist-in-Residence at the Prague Spring Festival.
In recent seasons, Antoine has performed with orchestras including the Vienna Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Bayerische Rundfunk, Orchestre de Paris, Czech Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Mahler Chamber Orchestra or the Akademie Für Alte Musik Berlin among many others. He performs regularly with major conductors including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Alan Gilbert, Daniel Harding, Paavo Järvi, Klaus Mäkelä, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Sir Antonio Pappano, Kirill Petrenko, Sir Simon Rattle, Francois-Xavier Roth, and Christian Thielemann.
Antoine Tamestit was a founding member of Trio Zimmermann with Frank Peter Zimmermann and Christian Poltera. Together they have recorded a number of acclaimed CDs for BIS Records, including Bach’s Goldberg Variations in their own arrangement, and have played in Europe’s most famous concert halls and series. Other chamber music partners include Emmanuel Ax, Isabelle Faust, Martin Fröst, Leonidas Kavakos, Nikolai Lugansky, Yo-Yo Ma, Emmanuel Pahud, Francesco Piemontesi, Cédric Tiberghien, Yuja Wang, Jörg Widmann, Shai Wosner and the Ébène Quartet.
Among the most important world premieres by Antoine Tamestit are Jörg Widmann’s Viola Concerto, Thierry Escaich’s La Nuit des Chants, Bruno Mantovani’s Concerto for Two Violas with Tabea Zimmermann, as well as Gérard Tamestit’s Sakura and Olga Neuwirth’s Remnants of Songs and Weariness Heals Wounds.
Together with Nobuko Imai, Antoine Tamestit continues to be the co-artistic director of the Viola Space Festival in Japan for 10 years, focusing on the development of viola repertoire and a wide range of education programmes.
Antoine records regularly with Harmonia Mundi as he continues to expand his vibrant scope of discography. Of the many of his acclaimed albums, Round Midnight with Quatuor Ebène was recently crowned with Chamber Award 2022 by the coveted Gramophone Award. His recent releases include Johannes Brahms’s Sonatas for Viola and Piano with Cédric Tiberghien and a Telemann album with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. His other most notable release was the Widmann Concerto, recorded with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Daniel Harding in February 2018. The recording was selected as Editor’s Choice in BBC Music Magazine and also won the Premier Award at the BBC Music Magazine Awards in 2019.
Born in Paris, Tamestit studied with Jean Sulem, Jesse Levine, and with Tabea Zimmermann. He was the recipient of several prizes including first prize at the William Primrose Competition in 2001, and the ARD International Music Competition in 2004 as well as being awarded the Credit Suisse Young Artist Award in 2008. In November 2022 he will receive the Paul-Hindemith-Preis of the City of Hanau.
Antoine Tamestit plays on the very first viola made by Antonio Stradivarius in 1672, generously loaned by the Habisreutinger Foundation.

Elle est régulièrement invitée à jouer de l’alto et du violon avec des ensembles et solistes de renom dans des festivals et salles à l’international.
Isabel Charisius s’implique depuis de nombreuses années dans la formation des jeunes générations de musiciens. Elle est internationalement reconnu pour son enseignement de l’alto et de la musique de chambre. Elle a enseigné et donné des masterclasses dans de nombreuses institutions prestigieuses, notamment la Musikhochschulen Köln (2005-2012) et Lucerne (depuis 2006) ainsi que de nombreuses masterclasses dans les plus prestigieuses académies et institutions (Britten Pears School, Encuentro de Musica y Academia Santander, Dutch String Quartet Academy, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, University of Arts Berlin…).

S’il cultive le grand répertoire classique et romantique, Michael Barenboïm est tout aussi reconnu pour ses interprétations de la musique des XXe et XXIe siècles. Il s’est souvent produit avec Pierre Boulez, dont il joue les œuvres en récital et avec l’Ensemble Boulez. En plus de ses concerts avec de grands orchestres tel que le Philharmonique de Vienne avec son père, Daniel Barenboïm, il se produit régulièrement avec sa mère, la pianiste Elena Bashkirova, et avec Frans Helmerson, Denis Kozhukhin, András Schiff, et Martha Argerich, entre autres. Premier violon solo de l’Orchestre du West Eastern Divan, il consacre aussi beaucoup d’énergie à l’enseignement, donnant des masterclasses dans le monde entier. Il est en outre professeur de violon et de musique de chambre à l’Académie Barenboïm-Saïd.
L’altiste franco-néerlandais, Sào Soulez Larivière, s’assure une carrière internationale comme musicien versatile. À l’âge de 21 ans, il est déjà lauréats de plusieurs concours internationales, dont le concours Max Rostal (DE, 2019 – 2ème Prix), le concours d’alto Cecil Aronowitz (GB, 2017- 3ème Prix) et le concours Johannes Brahms (AT, 2017- 3ème Prix).
Il a participé à de prestigieux festivals de musique, notamment le Schleswig- Holstein Musik Festival, le Menuhin Festival Gstaad, le Kronberg Academy Festival et le Verbier Academy Festival.
En dehors de poursuivre une carrière en tant que soliste, Sào adore jouer de la musique de chambre et a participé à des festivals comme Elba Isola Musicale d’Europa (IT), Hamburger Kammermusikfest (DE), Krzyzowa-Music Festival (PL) et ‘Chamber Music Connects the World’ à Kronberg (DE).
Sa passion pour l’élargissement du répertoire de l’alto l’a conduit à transcrire plusieurs œuvres pour l’instrument. Il se produit souvent avec sa sœur, la violoniste Cosima Soulez Larivière, avec laquelle il adore également jouer ses propres arrangements (comme ‘Le Carnaval de Venise’ de N.Paganini).
Né à Paris, Sào a commencé à jouer du violon à un très jeune âge. Il reçoit une bourse à l’âge de huit pour rejoindre la classe de Natasha Boyarsky à l’Ecole Yehudi Menuhin (GB). Après y avoir découvert l’alto, en jouant de la musique de chambre et dans l’orchestre, il décide de se consacrer à cet instrument dès 2016.
Son développement musicale s’est aussi enrichi en travaillant avec des musiciens renommée, dont Gerard Caussé, Nobuko Imai, Steven Isserlis, Gabor Tacács-Nagy, entre autres.
Sào est généreusement soutenu par la Fondation Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes, la Fondation Yehudi Menuhin ‘Live Music Now’ Berlin e.V., ainsi que par la Fondation Villa Musica Rheinland-Pfalz.
En 2019, il a été récompensé du prestigieux ‘Ritter-Preis’ à Hambourg par la Fondation Oscar et Vera Ritter.
Il réside à Berlin où il poursuit un Bachelor en musique avec Tabea Zimmermann à la Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’.

Adam Newman a commencé ses études musicales à l’âge de 7 ans, apprenant divers instruments, dont le violon et le piano, avant de se concentrer sur l’alto à l’âge de 14 ans. Il a ensuite poursuivi ses études au Junior Royal Northern College of Music avec Louise Lansdown. Newman est diplômé avec mention très bien de la Royal Academy of Music où il a étudié avec Matthew Souter, Philip Dukes et Hu Kun. Some musicians are destined to forge artistic paths that will open up new horizons for future generations. Yuri Bashmet is undoubtedly one of them, since it is he that established the viola as a leading instrument on the contemporary concert stage. Born in the Russian city of Rostov-on-Don in 1953, Yuri Bashmet studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Vadim Borisovsky and Feodor Druzhinin. On winning first prize in the International Music Competition in Munich, he embarked on an unparalleled world career in 1976. He has performed as a soloist with the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Vienna Philharmonic and the Orchestre National de France. Contemporary composers, among them Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Edisson Denissow, Mikael Tariverdijev, John Tavener, Giya Kancheli and Alexander Tchaikovsky, have composed and dedicated a total of over 50 works for and to him.
Yuri Bashmet took up the conducting baton in 1982. In 1992, he founded the Moscow Soloists Chamber Orchestra comprising highly talented young graduates of the Moscow Conservatory. Together, Yuri Bashmet and the soloists of this group became the first Russian ensemble to win a Grammy Award in 2008. Yuri Bashmet has been the artistic director and principal conductor of the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra since 2002. Film and television broadcasters in several different countries have documented his artistic work, and he himself is the creator and host of the TV programme Station of Dreams.
Yuri Bashmet enjoyed a longstanding artistic friendship with Svjatoslav Richter and, following Richter’s death, took over from him as artistic director of the renowned “December Nights” festival in Moscow. Bashmet is also the founder and chairman of the Yuri Bashmet International Viola Competition in Moscow, and likewise founded an international charitable fund, which led to creation of the Dmitri Shostakovich Prize awarded for special artistic achievement. Its winners include Gidon Kremer, Thomas Quasthoff, Viktor Tretjakov, Valery Gergiev, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Olga Borodina, Irina Antonova, Natalja Gutman, Yevgeny Kissin, Maxim Vengerov, Alexei Ratmansky, Yefim Bonfman, Denis Mazuyev and Tan Dun. Further to these achievements, Yuri Bashmet has participated in a great number of important charitable events.
Violinist, violist and conductor Julian Rachlin is one of the most exciting and respected musicians of our time. In the first thirty years of his career, he has performed as soloist with the world’s leading conductors and orchestras. Mr. Rachlin is Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. He also leads the « Julian Rachlin & Friends Festival » in Palma de Mallorca.
Highlights of Mr. Rachlin’s 2018/19 season include performances with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and Mariss Jansons, Montreal Symphony Orchestra and Christoph Eschenbach, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Juanjo Mena, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Manfred Honeck, as well as the KBS Symphony Orchestra and Myung-Whun Chung. Alongside soloist Sarah McElravy and the Royal Northern Sinfonia, he will perform the UK premiere of Penderecki’s Double Concerto for Violin and Viola, which is dedicated to him. Additionally, Mr. Rachlin will conduct among others the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, Naples Philharmonic, Moscow Philharmonic, St. Petersburg Symphony, Essen Philharmonic, Strasbourg Philharmonic, Slovenian Philharmonic, Zagreb Philharmonic and Trondheim Symphony Orchestra.
Julian Rachlin’s recent highlights include a residency at the Prague Spring Festival and his own cycle at the Vienna Musikverein. He also performed with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and Yuri Temirkanov, Filarmonica della Scala and Riccardo Chailly, Munich Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta, Philharmonia Orchestra and Jakub Hrůša, Orchestra del Maggio Musicale and Vladimir Ashkenazy, as well as the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Lahav Shani. As conductor, he toured Europe with the English Chamber Orchestra, and led the Royal Northern Sinfonia across South America and Japan. Additionally, he conducted the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia, Hungarian National Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Prague Philharmonia, and made his USA conducting debut at the Grand Teton Music Festival.
In recital and chamber music, Mr. Rachlin performs regularly with Itamar Golan, Denis Kozhukhin, Denis Matsuev, Mischa Maisky, Sarah McElravy, Vilde Frang and Janine Jansen.
Born in Lithuania, Mr. Rachlin immigrated to Vienna in 1978. He studied violin with Boris Kuschnir at the Vienna Conservatory and with Pinchas Zukerman. After winning the « Young Musician of the Year » Award at the Eurovision Competition in 1988, he became the youngest soloist ever to play with the Vienna Philharmonic, debuting under Riccardo Muti. At the recommendation of Mariss Jansons, Mr. Rachlin studied conducting with Sophie Rachlin. Since September 1999, he is on the violin faculty at the Music and Arts University of Vienna. His recordings for Sony Classical, Warner Classics and Deutsche Grammophon have been met with great acclaim. Mr. Rachlin, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, is committed to educational outreach and charity work.
