Ivry Gitlis est l’un des violonistes les plus populaires de son temps. Il a su réunir l’intégrité d’un parcours musical exigeant à des expériences artistiques originales et toujours renouvelées.
Originaires d’Ukraine, les parents d’Ivry Gitlis s’installent en Israël en 1921. Un an plus tard, Ivry Gitlis naît à Haïfa. Ses parents, non musiciens, encouragent la précocité musicale de leur enfant et lui fournissent un premier violon. Les progrès sont impressionnants ; Ivry Gitlis, qui travaille auprès de Mme Velikovsky (élève d’Adolf Busch), donne son premier concert à l’âge de sept ans. Soucieux de parfaire son éducation musicale, Ivry Gitlis s’installe en France et intègre le Conservatoire dans la classe de Jules Boucherit. Son prix en poche, il décide de se perfectionner auprès de Georges Enesco, Carl Flesch et Jacques Thibaud.
L’armistice signé, Ivry Gitlis effectue ses débuts avec l’Orchestre philharmonique de Londres. Alors que Glenn Gould inaugure la reprise des liens artistiques entre le Canada et l’U.R.S.S. au milieu des années 1950, Ivry Gitlis est, en 1963, le premier violoniste israélien à jouer dans un pays qui contraint encore souvent ses artistes à l’exil. Ivry Gitlis effectue ses premières tournées aux États-Unis avec Eugène Ormandy et Georges Szell et grave les grands concertos pour violon de son siècle (de Berg à Bartok, en passant par Sibelius).
Ivry Gitlis choisit ensuite de s’installer à Paris, ville où il accroît considérablement sa notoriété. Cette célébrité n’éloigne nullement le violoniste de l’essentiel. Bien au contraire, il se passionne pour la musique de son temps et interprète des pièces écrites pour lui comme la Pezze per Ivry de Bruno Maderna, et défend la musique de Xenakis. A la rencontre de tous les publics, dans tous les continents, Ivry Gitlis témoigne, comme peu, de l’échange permis par la musique.
Familier de nombreux styles musicaux et sachant voyager de l’un à l’autre sans difficulté, il crée des festivals et rencontre tous les publics. Pour ce violoniste de génie, qui peint et écrit à ses heures, la musique n’existe pas sans une communication et un partage immédiat.
Roby Lakatos is not only a virtuoso on the violin, but also an extremely versatile musician who is equally adept to performing classical music, jazz and the folk idiom of his home country of Hungary. He is hard to define: most often, he is described as a Gypsy violinist, a devil’s fiddler, classical master, jazz improviser, composer and arranger – and his unique artistic personality is all that. He is a universal musician combining brilliant technique that makes him one of the best violinists in the world with creativity in improvisation and composing power.
Roby Lakatos was born in 1965 to a legendary family of Romani musicians as a member of the seventh generation of direct descendants to János Bihari – the famous “King of Gipsy Violinists”, who was admired by Ludwig van Beethoven, introduced Johannes Brahms to the themes for his Hungarian Dances and of whom Franz Liszt said: “The sweet tones drawn from his magic violin fell like drops of nectar on our enchanted ears.” From early childhood, Roby Lakatos lived with the musical tradition of his family – he played in his uncle Sándor and father Antal’s band and appeared as the first violinist of a Gipsy orchestra at the age of nine.
Thus, he learned the tradition of violin technique and ornamentation at an early age, but also gained formal education at the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest.
After winning the first prize for violin at the age of 19, he left for Belgium and first played in Liège, and then in the newly opened club Les Ateliers de la Grande Ile in Brussels, which quickly became a hotspot thanks to him and his ensemble. In the ten years of performing in the club, the ensemble attracted numerous fans: the shows were regularly visited by Sir Yehudi Menuhin, for example, and Roby made connections and collaborated with a number of musicians, including violinist Vadim Repin and his role model for violin jazz music performances Stéphane Grappelli.
His concert career developed gradually, and now Roby Lakatos spends most of his time performing in various stages around the world. His ensemble has appeared, among other places, at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival, in Académies Musicales de Saintes, Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Ludwigsburg Schloßfestspiele and the Helsinki Festival, as well as in prestigious concert halls (Santa Cecilia in Rome, Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Zankel Hall – Carnegie Hall in New York). His versatility has given him and his ensemble the opportunity to collaborate with major orchestras–The London Symphony Orchestra, French National Radio Orchestra, Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, to name a few – as well as with numerous exceptional artists, including Giora Feidman, Herbie Hancock, Joshua Bell, Maksim Vengerov, Nigel Kennedy and Randy Brecker. In Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan he first performed in 1999, and has since been regularly playing in Asia. He records for Hungarian and Belgian television networks and has also appeared on German television and German national radio stations, as well as on BBC in London.

Seven years after the release of their 1991 album Gypsy Style for MW Records, The Roby Lakatos Ensemble recorded their first CD for Deutsche Grammophon, titled Lakatos. With a presentation of a unique style, which is a fusion of typical Gipsy music elements and jazz with improvisation as an important feature and specific technical effects, some of which he created himself (such as the fascinating left-hand pizzicato), Roby Lakatos and his ensemble also reflected a universal approach to the musical material by including on their CD the works by composers ranging from Zoltán Kodály and Johannes Brahms to John Williams’s music for Schindler’s List and Charles Aznavour’s chanson La Bohème. This album, which received the prestigious German Echo Klassik award, was followed by four more releases for Deutsche Grammophon: Lakatos Gold and Post Phrasing (1998/1999), Live From Budapest (1999), and As Time Goes By (2002) offering an equally exciting combination of
jazz and Gipsy music idioms with contemporary and classical elements. Apart from recording for other labels – With Musical Friends (Universal, 2001), Kinoshita Meets Lakatos (Prime Direction, Inc., 2002), Prokofiev… (Avanticlassic, 2005), Fire Dance (Avantijazz, 2005) and Klezmer Karma (Avanticlassic, 2006) – Roby Lakatos also started his own label Lakatos Recording Company to present somewhat different music, i.e. experimental works such as the project named The Legend of the Toad (2004), which is a sort of musical story told through his performances and the performances of his ensemble whose member, pianist Kálmán Cséki, also arranged the music.
Except for his long-time associate, violinist Lászlo Bóni, Roby Lakatos’s ensemble today is composed of young virtuoso musicians with classical musical education who are also well versed in the folklore tradition of Hungarian Gypsies.
Born in Siberia in 1971, Vadim Repin was eleven when he won the gold medal in all age categories in the Wienawski Competition and gave his recital debuts in Moscow and St Petersburg. At 14 he made his debuts in Tokyo, Munich, Berlin, Helsinki; a year later in Carnegie Hall. At 17 he was the youngest ever winner of the Reine Elisabeth Concours.
Since then he has performed with all the world’s greatest orchestras and conductors. Among the highlights of his career in the past few seasons have been tours with the London Symphony Orchestra and Valery Gergiev, the NHK Orchestra and Dutoit; a tour of Australia with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski, and acclaimed premières in London, Philadelphia, New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Salle Pleyel in Paris and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw of the violin concerto written for him by James MacMillan, culminating in a BBC Prom at the sold out Royal Albert Hall.
Vadim Repin recorded the great Russian violin concerti by Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky on Warner Classics. For Deutsche Grammophon he recorded the Beethoven Violin Concerto, the Brahms Violin Concerto and Double Concerto (Truls Mørk, cello) with the Gewandhaus Orchester, the Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov trios with Mischa Maisky and Lang Lang (which won the Echo Classic) and works by Grieg, Janacek and César Franck with Nikolai Lugansky, which won the 2011 BBC Music Award.
In 2010 he received the Victoire d’Honneur, France’s most prestigious musical award for a lifetime’s dedication to music, and became Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres. Following master classes and concerts in Beijing in December 2014 he was awarded an honorary professorship of the Central Conservatory of Music, and in 2015 an honorary professorship of the Shanghai Conservatory.
Highlights of the last season included concerts in Hong Kong and Beijing, a European tour with Orchestre de la Suisse Romande under Neeme Jarvi, and concerts in Vienna with Kent Nagano and Lionel Bringuier. In April 2014 Vadim Repin as Artistic Director presented the first Trans-Siberian Festival of the Arts in Novosibirsk’s magnificent new concert hall, featuring a new commission, ‘Voices of Violin’ by Benjamin Yussupov, and a joint appearance by Vadim Repin and prima ballerina Svetlana Zakharova. The Festival was enthusiastically received and was repeated and extended in the spring of 2015, this time featuring a specially commissioned violin concerto, ‘De Profundis’, by Lera Auerbach.
Last season began with concerts in Vilnius, Prague, Vienna, Paris and Ankara and a Vadim Repin Festival in Tokyo in November with chamber music and orchestral concerts. Performances in the United States were followed by concerts with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Vladimir Ashkenazy in London and Cardiff, the German première of the Yussupov concerto in the Berlin Philharmonie, and a return to Japan for concerts with the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the Tchaikovsky centenary. This season began with concerts in Yerevan, Barcelona and Madrid and a tour of European capitals with the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, and will culminate with a ‘Transsiberia goes to Tel Aviv’ project.

Avec plus de 30 ans de carrière en tant que soliste, musicien de chambre et chef d’orchestre, Joshua Bell est l’un des violonistes les plus célèbres de son époque. Nommé Directeur musical de l’Académie de St Martin in the Fields en 2011, il est le premier successeur de Sir Neville Marriner depuis sa création en 1958. Convaincu de la valeur de la musique en tant qu’outil diplomatique et éducatif, J. Bell s’implique dans beaucoup de projets d’enseignement et de performances artistiques et participe à la création d’un grand nombre d’oeuvres jusqu’à la réalisation de ses propres cadences. Ces multiples engagements lui ont valu les plus prestigieuses récompenses culturelles et internationales. Il joue le Stradivarius Huberman de 1713.
Ana Chumachenco est l’une des professeurs de violon les plus reconnues internationalement. Son père, disciple du grand Leopold Auer, l’encourage dès l’âge de quatre ans à travailler le violon et se charge lui-même de ses premières leçons. À l’âge de dix-huit ans, elle remporte le premier prix du Concours international de violon Carl Fleisch, à Londres. Yehudi Menuhin, Joseph Sigeti et Sandor Vegh comptent alors parmi ses mentors. Si elle apparaît comme une soliste hors pair, passionnée par la musique de chambre, Ana Chumachenco affiche aussi un attrait particulier pour l’enseignement.
Augustin Dumay a débuté sa carrière en 1980 grâce à Herbert von Karajan qui l’a invité à jouer en soliste avec le Philharmonique de Berlin. Depuis, il s’est produit avec des orchestres de premier plan, sous la direction de chefs célèbres tels que Seiji Ozawa, Charles Dutoit, Yuri Temirkanov et Kurt Masur, ainsi qu’avec les grands chefs de la nouvelle génération. Augustin Dumay est également très actif dans le monde entier comme chef d’orchestre et est, depuis 2011, le Directeur musical de l’Orchestre philharmonique du Kansai. Très impliqué auprès de la jeune génération, il est Maître en résidence à la Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth, où il enseigne à de jeunes violonistes de très haut niveau. Ses 50 enregistrements pour EMI et Deutsche Grammophon ont remporté de multiples prix internationaux. Le violoniste français joue un Guarnerius del Gesu de 1743, qui était le violon de Leonid Kogan.
Randall Goosby, violoniste américain ayant signé en exclusivité avec Decca Classics en 2020 à l’âge de 24 ans, est réputé pour sa musicalité sensible et intense, ainsi que pour son engagement à rendre la musique plus inclusive et plus accessible. Il défend les compositeurs sous-représentés et inspire les autres par son art.
Les temps forts de la saison 2023/24 de Goosby comprennent des débuts avec le Boston Symphony, le National Symphony, et des débuts européens avec le Rotterdam Philharmonic, le Danish National Radio Symphony, et le Oslo Philharmonic. En tant qu’artiste en résidence au Southbank Centre de Londres, Goosby interprétera le Concerto pour violon n° 3 de Mozart avec le London Philharmonic et se produira en récital à travers l’Europe et les États-Unis.
Goosby a fait ses débuts au festival Mostly Mozart en 2023, en interprétant le concerto pour violon de Tchaïkovski. Il a déjà collaboré avec des orchestres de premier plan, notamment l’Orchestre de Philadelphie, l’Orchestre philharmonique de Los Angeles et l’Orchestre national royal d’Écosse. Son premier album de concertos avec Yannick Nézet-Séguin et l’Orchestre de Philadelphie comprend des œuvres de Max Bruch et de Florence Price, et Gramophone a salué son jeu expressif.
Son premier album, Roots, est une célébration de la musique afro-américaine, explorant son évolution depuis les spirituals jusqu’aux compositions modernes. L’album comprend des enregistrements en première mondiale de musique de Florence Price et d’œuvres de William Grant Still et de Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, ainsi qu’une pièce nouvellement commandée à Xavier Foley.
Fervent défenseur de l’éducation et de la sensibilisation, Goosby a travaillé avec des organisations telles que l’Opportunity Music Project et Concerts in Motion. Il a organisé une résidence avec l’Iris Collective à Memphis, reliant l’histoire familiale à la musique et encourageant la collaboration communautaire.

His passion for chamber music and friendship connect Kirill Troussov with artists like Sol Gabetta, Yuja Wang, Daniel Hope, Joshua Bell, Gautier und Renaud Capucon, Yuri Bashmet, Mischa Maisky, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Julian Rachlin, Christian Zacharias und Natalia Gutman.
Substitution for Gidon Kremer in Paris, Asia Tour with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra, his spectacular performance at the BBC Proms and his activity as jury member at international competitions, a.o. at the “Schoenfeld International String Competition”, are just some of numerous highlights of his past concert seasons.
His international awards include the European cultural award “Pro-Europa”, the Davidoff-Prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the international Yamaha Prize and the Reuters-Prize of the Verbier Festival.
Kirill Troussov regularly gives master classes at the Mozarteum Salzburg, European Music Intstitute Vienna, in Cremona, Milan, Madrid, Dublin, Berlin, Munich ,Oslo, Budapest, USA and Hong Kong.
Kirill Troussov’s recordings — among others for EMI Classics, Warner Classics, Dabringhaus und Grimm, Naxos and Farao Classics — have been repeatedly awarded by the international press. Furthermore he can be seen with Yuja Wang on her DVD with Kurt Masur.
His recent CDs « Emotions » (MDG) and « Memories » (MDG) have been highly praised by the international press and the public — among others by « Süddeutsche Zeitung » and the French music magazine « Diapason ». He completed his studies with Zakhar Bron and Christoph Poppen. His mentors have been Igor Oistrach, Herman Krebbers und Sir Yehudi Menuhin.
Kirill Troussov plays the Antonio Stradivari violin « Brodsky » of 1702, on which violinist Adolph Brodsky performed the world premiere of Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto, on December 4, 1881.
