Step into the world of Maurice Béjart through the powerful vision of Julien Favreau, the new artistic director of Béjart Ballet Lausanne. This highly anticipated production reflects on the company’s rich legacy (featuring the iconic Stravinsky’s Firebird), while offering a fresh perspective on its future. A deeply moving and cathartic experience.
20.07 Klaus Mäkelä Yunchan Lim Verbier Festival Orchestra
Two of today’s most electrifying talents unite on stage: Klaus Mäkelä, a visionary conductor, and Yunchan Lim, the remarkable pianist and latest Van Cliburn Gold Medalist. Together, they bring a programme of dazzling contrasts, from the rich lyricism of Rachmaninoff to the fiery brilliance of Stravinsky’s Firebird.
An Evgeny Kissin recital is always an occasion to remember. A towering figure of the piano, he presents a programme spanning his most beloved repertoire, from Bach to Shostakovich, with Chopin at its heart. Experience the artistry, virtuosity, and deep passion of one of the world’s greatest pianists.
Minsoo Sohn dedicated years to exploring Beethoven’s complete sonatas, culminating in his acclaimed recording for Sony Classical. At Verbier, he performs the composer’s final three sonatas—monumental works that push the boundaries of piano music—offering a rare chance to hear them through one of today’s leading Beethoven interpreters.
Klaus Mäkelä, Daniel Lozakovich, Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Timothy Ridout, Blythe Teh Engstroem, Mao Fujita, Marc Bouchkov, Johan Dalene, Amanda Håøy Horn: here is an exceptional line-up for this Rencontre Inédite, so emblematic of chamber music in Verbier. The programme includes two masterpieces of Romantic music, with quintets by Saint-Saëns and Schumann.
Discovered at Verbier in 2012 shortly after winning the Tchaikovsky Competition (at just 21 years old), the spectacular Daniil Trifonov has since built an exemplary career worldwide. It’s a great joy to welcome him back with this recital featuring Tchaikovsky, Chopin’s Waltzes, and Barber’s stunning Sonata.
Since his time as a Verbier Festival Academy student in 2018, Mao Fujita has captivated audiences with his depth and sensitivity. Now a major voice of his generation, he returns to perform a spectacular programme devoted to the Preludes of Chopin and Scriabin—music that perfectly showcases his poetic touch and effortless virtuosity.
Bryn Terfel brings his unmistakable charisma to Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, while Ludovic Tézier, Yulia Matochkina and Freddie De Tommaso shine in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. An evening of high drama and unforgettable music.
Festival favourites Leonidas Kavakos, Antoine Tamestit, and Gautier Capuçon join forces with the brilliant Mao Fujita for a Rencontre Inédite. The programme includes Beethoven’s Trio No. 3 Op. 9, No. 1 and Brahms’s monumental Piano Quartet No. 2.
The highlight of our tribute to Shostakovich, Evgeny Kissin has crafted a fascinating programme showcasing the stylistic diversity of the Russian genius: Cello Sonata with Mischa Maisky, Piano Quintet with the Quatuor Ébène, Concertino for Two Pianos with Martha Argerich and the Viola Sonata with Antoine Tamestit. A truly unmissable evening!
We know it, you love music! And if you love music, you love the piano… And if you love the piano, you will love Brad Mehldau, who shines among the greatest pianists of all time and across all genres, alongside Clara Haskil, Arthur Rubinstein, Vladimir Horowitz, Thelonious Monk, Glenn Gould, Martha Argerich, Art Tatum, Sviatoslav Richter, Yuja Wang, Keith Jarrett, to name few stars of the keyboard.
“The most influential jazz pianist of the last 20 years”
A true musical genius of our time, Brad Mehldau’s creativity knows no bounds, whether in solo performances, trios, tributes to The Beatles, Bach or Fauré, or in collaborations with Anne Sofie von Otter and Renée Fleming.
Verbier audiences remember his dazzling 2023 Église recital. This year, Mehldau returns to the main stage with his trio, featuring Felix Moseholm on double bass and longtime drummer Jorge Rossy, with whom he has recorded many albums. A must-see!
2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of the great Russian composer. The Verbier Festival pays tribute to Dmitri Shostakovich (1906–1975) with five exceptional concerts, showcasing the full expressive power of his music—where tragic, comic, melancholic, ironic, and sarcastic emotions intertwine and create a unique work. Indeed, it is impossible to listen to his uniquely distinctive music without considering the historical context of the Soviet era under the rule of Stalin and later Khrushchev and Brezhnev.
Author of three complete operas, fifteen symphonies, six concertos, fifteen string quartets, and a rich catalog of chamber music, ballets, and film scores, the St. Petersburg native leaves us with a prodigious legacy. Whether you are familiar with Shostakovich or not, come and discover these concerts with an open mind, performed by exceptional artists.
The Piano Sonata No. 2 (1943), dedicated to his teacher Leonid Nikolaev, and Two Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87 No. 15 & 24 (1950–1951), a tribute to Bach, will be featured in Evgeny Kissin’s recital. (First part: Bach and Chopin).
The Piano Trio No. 2, Op. 67 (1944) is one of the composer’s most popular and iconic works, renowned for its references to traditional Jewish music (Allegretto). The third movement (Largo) was even performed at the Shostakovich’s public funeral at the Moscow Conservatory.
The highlight of our tribute to Shostakovich, Evgeny Kissin has crafted a fascinating program showcasing the stylistic diversity and emotional depth of the Russian genius. He will first perform the tormented Cello Sonata, Op. 40 (1934) alongside Mischa Maisky. He will then be joined by the Quatuor Ebène for the magnificent Piano Quintet, Op. 57 (1940).
In the second half, Evgeny Kissin and Martha Argerich will present the rare Concertino for Two Pianos, Op. 94 (1954). To conclude this exceptional concert, Antoine Tamestit and Evgeny Kissin will unite for the Viola Sonata, Op. 147 (1975), Shostakovich’s musical testament, composed just days before his death. A truly unmissable evening!
The legendary Russian pianist will perform both Piano Sonatas: No. 1, Op. 12, composed at the age of 20, and No. 2, Op. 61, premiered by the composer himself in Moscow in 1943. Viktoria Postnikova will then present a rarely performed version of Symphony No. 14, Op. 135, which Shostakovich composed in 1969—a true ode to life and death, set to texts by García Lorca, Apollinaire, and Rilke. This arrangement by the composer, for piano, mezzo-soprano, bass, and percussion, brings a striking purity to the work, making its music even more moving.
Another “enfant terrible” takes the stage for the final concert in tribute to Shostakovich. For his first appearance in Verbier, the electrifying Teodor Currentzis will conduct the composer’s most famous symphony, No. 5, Op. 47, premiered in 1937 in Leningrad by Evgeny Mravinsky. This masterpiece is charged with an intense emotional tension, reflecting the composer’s deep struggle between loyalty to the regime and his artistic freedom. A must-hear work! (First part of the programme: Tchaikovsky, with the Verbier Festival Orchestra.)

Stanford Live Announces Special Partnership with the Verbier Festival
November 7, 2024 | This groundbreaking collaboration will feature a week-long series of events hosted by Stanford Live in April 2025.
This unique residency is designed to offer both organizations the opportunity to exchange ideas, collaborate with students, engage the community and foster long-term partnerships, both at Stanford and in Verbier, Switzerland. Stanford students will have the rare opportunity to attend open rehearsals and panel discussions, and work closely with Verbier musicians, exploring repertoire, refining performance techniques, and participating in masterclasses and coachings.
The partnership reflects Stanford Live’s commitment to promoting artistic excellence by engaging with students and the community at large, and fostering partnerships across the campus. It also speaks to one of the most important aims of the Verbier Festival, transmission of musical knowledge between generations.
The residency culminates in the highly anticipated return to the West Coast of the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra. The performance, led by VFCO Music Director Gábor Takács-Nagy, the renowned Hungarian conductor and founder of the Takács Quartet, will be the culmination of Stanford Live’s ongoing celebration of the music of Mahler and the Second Viennese School.
Join us in celebrating this exceptional artistic exchange. More to follow with a detailed announcement in January 2025.
The Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra performance is generously supported by David Wollenberg and The Wollenberg Foundation.
