Pablo Sainz-Villegas plays Albéniz: Asturias (Leyenda)
In the last decade, Pablo Sainz-Villegas’ career has entered a new dimension. « Volver », his first recording for Sony Classical with Plácido Domingo, was a huge success, followed by the classic « Soul of Spanish Guitar » and more recently the ambitious « Blue Album » . This success has given Pablo Sainz-Villegas an unprecedented freedom, leading the listener through the stories he tells with the talent of a storyteller. For this recital, he draws on the two most illustrious sources of classical guitar: the great Baroque repertoire, with a highly personal arrangement of Bach’s famous and universal Chaconne, and Spanish music, from which the artist draws his own roots, from the lyricism of Albeniz (with the famous ‘Asturias’ at the top) to the austere virtuosity of Mangoré, via the impressionist accents of Turina.
Pablo Sainz-Villegas allows himself two forays outside these repertoires: firstly, the Preludes by Villa-Lobos, the composer’s testament for solo guitar, conceived as tributes to his various sources of inspiration, and secondly, the swiss premiere of the ‘Aire’ by Francisco Coll, one of his most inventive compatriots, whose world of sound is as colourful as it is meticulous.
