Satie’s Gymnopédies are a wonderful introduction to the classical repertoire for audiences. Their mysterious charm, carried by a melody from ancient times, inspired the entire 20th century of music.
The fame of Chopin’s Prelude Op.28 No.4 hides another mystery: its melancholy stems from the fact that the artist composed it while trying to cure George Sand’s tuberculosis in the Balearic Islands.
Schubert’s third Impromptu hides, in the softness of the flats, a song of unreal beauty, somewhere between opera and dream.
Meanwhile, in the Aria from Bach’s Third Suite, nostalgia gives way to full awareness of the here and now, in a reflection on human suffering with biblical resonances.
Another abstraction is Les Barricades Mystérieuses, in which François Couperin multiplies the effects of sonic trompe-l’oeil to depict mathematical figures musically.
In short, an anthology of piano classics by its finest global ambassador, in the prestigious Salle des Combins at the Verbier Festival.
