PETER MATTEI / DANIEL HEIDE
Unforgettable as Don Giovanni in 2022 and a superb Count Almaviva in 2024, Peter Mattei returns this summer to Verbier for an intimate recital devoted to the world of Franz Schubert. An event not to be missed with the Swedish baritone, undoubtedly one of the most captivating voices on the international opera scene.
Programme
FRANZ SCHUBERT (1797-1828)
Winterreise D. 911
Concert without interval
Peter Mattei sings Mozart Don Giovanni: ‘Deh, vieni alla finestra’ (‘Oh, come to the window’) at Verbier Festival
What is it that gives Schubert’s Lieder their eternity? Firstly, their unfathomable depth, anticipating the discoveries of psychoanalysis by more than a century (Erlkönig), or digging into the depths of the human soul subject to the most universal feelings (Gretchen am Spinnrad). Then there’s their ambivalence, between humble, popular simplicity and constant innovation. One only has to hum the lullaby-like melody of Gute Nacht to realise this. Finally, Schubert’s Lieder are universal in character, following us through all the stages of life: some, like the Ave Maria or the Ständchen, have gone beyond the boundaries of classical music.
The singer becomes the storyteller, and Peter Mattei, renowned for his imposing, warm timbre and his ability to embody the text he sings, is well versed in this kind of exercise. His recording of Winterreise in 2019, followed by a memorable tour in the winter of 2022, left a lasting impression, establishing the Swedish baritone as one of the leading interpreters of this repertoire.
