James Gaffigan conducts Stravinsky: The Rake’s Progress (VFJO)
It is one of the most famous misunderstandings in the history of music: far from the heroic tales popular in 19th-century opera, La Traviata was a resounding failure when it premiered in 1853. Nearly two centuries later, the visionary genius of the composer—who shifted operatic action from battlefields to salons, from knights to courtesans, from the epic to the intimate—is widely celebrated. Musically, in the words of Renée Fleming, “there is no more perfect role in the entire soprano repertoire than Violetta.”
A rite of passage for all rising stars of the operatic world, the role may offer the chance to discover, among the young talents of the Verbier Festival Academy’s Atelier Lyrique, the next opera star.
A highly experienced and inspiring conductor will lead the Verbier Festival Junior Orchestra: James Gaffigan, well known to Swiss audiences for his tenure with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and a regular presence at the world’s leading opera houses.
