Since retiring from his unrivalled career as a classical singer, bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff has grown a new performance career as a jazz singer – and very much a jazz singer rather than a classical singer who ‘does jazz,’ embracing the genre’s greater freedom of expression, the different vocal technique required when working with a microphone, and its more egalitarian ensemble dynamic.
