WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART
Piano Sonata No. 11 in A major K. 331
Piano Sonata No. 2 in F major K. 280

Piano Sonata No. 15 in F major K. 533

Popular K. 331 probably dates from 1783, and surprises for none of its movements being in sonata form. A delicately graceful theme and six variations opens. Then after a minuet and trio comes the famous finale with its ringing, major-keyed imitation of Turkish military bands. Mozart’s Sonata No. 2 in F major is one of the six earliest surviving sonatas he wrote at the end of 1774 and start of 1775 in his late teens. Unusual for all three movements being in triple time, its final Presto is especially charming with its playful answering phrases. Conversing musical lines are closer still in K. 533 with its more polyphonic writing. Initially cast in two movements, before he later added his K. 494 Rondo of 1786 as a finale, this 1788 work contains an especially lovely Andante creating dramatic suspense through dissonance.
