Conducted by its music director Gábor Takács-Nagy, the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra opens the concert with a performance of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, a work woven into modern pop culture by its use advertisements and in Milos Forman’s film Amadeus. They finish with Beethoven’s equally famous Symphony No. 5.
Gautier Capuçon joins Takács-Nagy and the young musicians on stage for one of the most celebrated concertos ever written for his instruments: Camille Saint-Saëns’s turbulent and lyrical Cello Concerto. As an encore, Capuçon performs an transcription of Tchaikovsky’s Andante cantabile arranged for cello and orchestra: a truly special moment!
