The American pianist begins with Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas Nos. 6 and 23; the latter sonata is the famous “Appassionata”, described by the writer Romain Rolland as a “torrent of fire in a bed of granite.” Next come two excerpts from Liszt’s celebrated Années de pèlerinage, and then his Réminiscences de Don Juan, a musical paraphrase of Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni.
