CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS
Le Carnaval des animaux (The Carnival of the Animals)
ROBERT SCHUMANN
Symphony No. 4 in D Minor, Op. 120
- Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra
- Gábor Takács-Nagy conductor
- Mischa Maisky cello
Following Saint-Saëns’s Concerto, the concert continues with Le Carnaval des animaux, the composer’s “fantasy”, which features multiple musical parodies of his contemporary composers. Although not originally meant to be published, the work made its author famous, and the beloved The Swan would be performed by the ballerina, Anna Pavlowa. The concert ends with Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D minor. Named Fantaisie symphonique, it reflects the composer’s desire to break out of the framework of classical symphonic structure.
