Summer concerts in Verbier with the VFCO
Last week, we showcased the Verbier Festival’s global reach through the international tours of its Chamber Orchestra. Today, the spotlight is on its summer program in our Swiss Valais, featuring six unmissable concerts!
A pinnacle of virtuosity for the soloist, La Campanella, the Rondo à la clochette that forms the third movement of Paganini’s concerto, is one of the most famous and spectacular works in the violin repertoire. The talent of Kristof Baráti, First Prize winner of the Paganini International Competition in 2010, is perfectly suited to this challenge. The Hungarian violinist, accompanied by his compatriot Gábor Takács-Nagy, will also present a second concerto during this exceptional evening: Alexey Shor’s 4th Concerto, created in 2021 and already a classic, thanks to its charm and irresistible references to Mozartian style. The program will also feature Brahms’ 4th Symphony, with the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and its Music Crirector, the beloved and energetic Gábor Takács-Nagy.
22.07 Klaus Mäkelä
Sergei Babayan & Daniil Trifonov
A stellar lineup awaits for this VFCO concert, featuring the most sought-after artists of 2024—Klaus Mäkelä and Daniil Trifonov (Source: Bachtrack, Busiest Concert Performers).
They’ll be joined by Sergei Babayan, a familiar face in Verbier, for Bartók’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Percussion. It’s always a special moment to see them together, as Babayan played a pivotal role in shaping Trifonov’s artistry during his studies in Cleveland.
In the second half, Mäkelä takes the podium for his compatriot Sibelius’s Fifth Symphony— he recently recorded a landmark version of this work. His other Verbier concert is nearly sold out, this is a rare chance to experience him conducting in Verbier!
26.07 Leonardo García-Alarcón
Bach – Mass in B minor
Renowned conductor Leonardo García-Alarcón—celebrated for his work with Capella Mediterranea—is a true musician with multiple skills. A harpsichordist, entrepreneur (founder of La Cité Bleue in Geneva), and even a composer, the Argentinian musician brings a unique depth to everything he touches.
At the core of his artistry is Johann Sebastian Bach, who profoundly shaped his musical journey from the age of eight. “Without Bach, I wouldn’t be a musician,” he says.
For his Verbier Festival debut, Leonardo García-Alarcón will conduct one of the Leipzig Cantor’s most beautiful masterpieces, the Mass in B Minor. He will be joined by an exceptional cast of singers specializing in this repertoire—Ying Fang, Mariana Flores, Benjamin Appl—along with the outstanding Chœur de Chambre de Namur, of which he is artistic director.
‘It was a huge success, the audience left the hall seized with an admiration that quickly spread throughout Paris’. The press was so enthousiastic after the 1842 premiere of Rossini’s Stabat Mater. It’s no surprise, as this masterpiece remains one of the most profound works in sacred music.
This moving text—Mary’s grief at the crucifixion of his son— the piece will be brought to life by one of today’s finest sopranos, Sonya Yoncheva, making her much-anticipated Verbier Festival debut after captivating audiences at The Met, La Scala, Covent Garden, and the Paris Opéra. She will be joined by baritone Ludovic Tézier, mezzo-soprano Alice Coote, tenor Sunnyboy Dladla, and the Chœur de Chambre de Namur.
Opening the evening, Fabio Luisi will lead Haydn’s Symphony No. 49,
“La Passione“.
30.07 Gábor Takács-Nagy,
Antoine Tamestit
& Pierre Génisson
Gábor Takács-Nagy will be in his element for this concert featuring Haydn, Bruch, and Schumann.
The evening begins with one of Haydn’s London symphonies, Symphony No. 101, The Clock— named for the steady ticking rhythm that runs through its second movement.
Gábor Takács-Nagy will then be joined by violist Antoine Tamestit and clarinetist Pierre Genisson for Max Bruch’s Concerto for Viola and Clarinet, composed in 1912 for his son. In the second half, the VFCO takes center stage for Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, a piece close to the conductor’s heart. His unforgettable 2023 performance of the Third Symphony Rhenish remains a highlight.
Second eagerly-awaited concert at the Verbier Festival of the Enfant terrible of classical music, Teodor Currentzis. A true iconoclast, he pushes boundaries and breathes new life into every score, delivering performances that are always exciting and never conventional.
This evening, he takes on two pillars of the Romantic repertoire. First, Brahms’ Violin Concerto, performed by Marc Bouchkov, a festival favorite since his breakout at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition.
Currentzis then leads Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony No. 4, a radiant work inspired by the composer’s travels in Italy (he even passed through Valais on his way back from Roma). A joyful piece—much like Teodor Currentzis!
